Foulness Archaeology

Hunkered within the sinking estuarine flood zones of East Essex, a new Heritage Centre and exhibition hall memorialises this unique landscape and its distinct textured histories, from the military to the ornithological.

Partly influenced by the 1970’s ‘bunker archaeology’ of Paul Virilio, a series of cast-driven/artefact-focussed/facsimile spaces are identified as a driver for the exhibition spaces, designed to act as a counterpoint to the deteriorating heritage condition of the de- commissioned landscape beyond.

The building yearns for its lost past: a harmonious, laconic world where having- a-natter over a cup of tea, spotting a Great Crested Grebe or fetishising over the capabilities of heavy-duty artillery have a satisfyingly British sense of equivalence.
